Roofing Tear-Off: Weight Limit Concerns
Recommendation: 15 Yard Dumpster (Roofing)
Customer Question
Green Bay, WI
I'm a roofing contractor doing a tear-off on a 2,000 sq ft home. The problem is there are TWO layers of shingles that need to come off.
I normally use a 15 yard for roof jobs, but I'm worried about the weight with double layers. These are standard asphalt 3-tab shingles.
My usual hauler said the 15 yard has a 3-ton weight limit for roofing. Will two layers from 2,000 sq ft exceed that?
I don't want to get hit with overage fees. Should I get a 20 yard or just do the 15?

Good question—weight limits are critical for roofing debris. Let me do the math:
Weight calculation for your job:
Single layer of asphalt shingles:
- 2,000 sq ft ÷ 100 = 20 "squares"
- ~250 lbs per square = 5,000 lbs (2.5 tons)
Double layer:
- 5,000 lbs × 2 = 10,000 lbs (5 tons)
Add underlayment, nails, debris:
- ~500-1,000 lbs additional
Total estimated: 5.25-5.5 tons
My recommendation: This exceeds 3-ton limit significantly.
Options:
1. Get a 20 yard with higher weight limit (often 4-5 tons for roofing)
2. Use two 15 yards sequentially (do half, swap, do half)
3. Find a hauler with 5-ton limit on 15 yard (some roofing-specific haulers offer this)
For your situation, I'd go with Option 1 or 3. A 20 yard roofing dumpster with 5-ton limit should handle it. The volume won't be an issue—shingles are dense. A 15 yard has plenty of space for this debris.
Cost consideration: Overage fees are typically $75-100/ton. At 2+ tons over on a 15 yard, you'd pay $150-200+ in fees. A larger limit upfront is cheaper.
Outcome
Contractor used a 15 yard roofing dumpster with 5-ton limit from a different hauler. Came in at 4.8 tons—just under the limit. Confirmed the weight calculation was accurate.
Key Insights
- Two-layer roofs double the weight (obvious but often underestimated)
- Roofing shingles: ~250 lbs per square (100 sq ft)
- Always calculate weight for roofing jobs—volume is rarely the issue
- Overage fees can exceed the cost of a larger dumpster
