Bathroom Remodel: Full Tile Removal

Recommendation: 10 Yard Dumpster
Customer Question
Chicago, IL
I'm a contractor doing a bathroom gut for a client. Two bathrooms—one master (about 100 sq ft floor) and one hall bath (about 50 sq ft floor). Both have floor-to-ceiling tile in the shower areas. Total tile coming out is probably 300-350 sq ft of floor tile and maybe 200 sq ft of wall tile. My concern is weight. Tile and cement board are heavy. I've had weight overage issues before. Should I go with a 10 or 15 yard? Is a 10 even allowed for tile?

Good thinking on weight—tile and cement board can add up. Let's calculate: Weight estimation: Floor tile with thinset: ~15 lbs/sq ft - 150 sq ft × 15 lbs = 2,250 lbs Wall tile with thinset: ~12 lbs/sq ft - 200 sq ft × 12 lbs = 2,400 lbs Cement board/substrate: ~800-1,000 lbs Miscellaneous (drywall, debris): ~300-500 lbs Total estimated: ~6,000-6,200 lbs (3-3.1 tons) Volume needed: Tile debris from this job would fit easily in a 10 yard—probably fill it about 30-40%. My recommendation: 10 yard dumpster Here's why: - Most 10 yards have 2-3 ton weight limits - Your estimated 3 tons is borderline but likely OK - Volume is not an issue at all - 15 yard would be overkill and costs $50-75 more Risk mitigation: - Ask hauler specifically about weight limit for "tile/renovation debris" - Some haulers have 3-ton limits on 10 yards for this type of material - If your hauler only allows 2 tons, either find one with 3-ton limit or go with 15 yard Tile is dense but not as heavy as concrete. You should be fine with 10 yard as long as the weight limit is 3 tons.

Outcome

Tile weighed less than expected—came in at 2.7 tons. The 10 yard was about 35% full by volume. Good choice for the job.

Key Insights

  • Tile debris is dense but not as heavy as people fear
  • Floor tile with thinset: ~15 lbs/sq ft
  • Wall tile with thinset: ~12 lbs/sq ft
  • 10 yard is often sufficient for bathroom remodels—volume isn't the issue
