Storm Damage: Tree and Debris Cleanup
Recommendation: 20 Yard Dumpster
Customer Question
Rockford, IL
We had a bad windstorm come through last week and I've got a mess in my yard. Two medium-sized trees came down (maybe 8-10 inch diameter trunks), plus tons of branches everywhere. Also some fence damage and siding that blew off.
My question is—do I need a special "yard waste" dumpster or can this all go in a regular dumpster? Some companies are telling me yard waste only, others say regular is fine.
Also not sure on size. There's a LOT of branches.

Storm cleanup is stressful—let me help sort this out.
Yard waste vs. regular dumpster:
This varies by hauler and disposal site. Here's the general rule:
Yard waste dumpsters:
- Go to composting facilities
- Usually ONLY accept organic material
- No treated wood, no construction debris
- Sometimes required by local ordinance
Regular dumpsters:
- Go to landfills
- Can accept yard waste PLUS other debris
- Your fence and siding can go in too
- Usually more flexible
My recommendation: Regular 20 yard dumpster
Since you have:
- Tree debris (organic)
- Fence damage (wood—possibly treated)
- Siding (construction debris)
A regular dumpster makes more sense. A yard waste only dumpster won't accept the fence and siding.
Size recommendation:
Two 8-10" diameter trees + branches = significant volume. Here's my thinking:
- Tree trunks cut to 4' lengths: ~60-80 cubic feet
- Branches (this is bulky): ~150-200 cubic feet
- Fence and siding: ~20-30 cubic feet
Total: 230-310 cubic feet
A 20 yard (540 cu ft) gives you comfortable room. A 15 yard (405 cu ft) would work but might be tight if branches are bulky.
Tips:
- Cut trunks into manageable 3-4' sections
- Chip or cut branches to compress them
- Load heavy trunk sections on bottom
- Don't exceed weight limit (usually 3-4 tons)—tree debris is heavier than it looks when wet
Outcome
Standard dumpster accepted all debris without issue. 20 yard was about 85% full. Hauler confirmed most Rockford-area landfills accept mixed loads like this.
Key Insights
- Regular dumpsters often accept yard waste—ask first
- Mixed debris (organic + construction) needs regular dumpster, not yard waste
- Tree debris is bulky—branches take more space than expected
- Wet tree debris is heavy—watch weight limits
